Puppy Philosophy

Puppies are born in special whelping kennels inside our home. They receive personal attention from their first day of birth until they leave for their new home. During their first three weeks they get very special and personal attention, which introduces the pups to people as well as their mom and litter mates. This also starts to build a social foundation for the pups. Although they are still very young, puppies begin learning from their very first day of birth.

At about three weeks of age the pups are then transferred to our dog building where they have more room to romp in large 10'x10' puppy pens. Here they begin to learn about outdoor life as well as the environment of a dog kennel. The pups start learning to potty train themselves in a subtle sort of way. They still get lots of daily attention from people. Mom stays with them for the next two weeks as they are gradually weaned off of mom and onto a high protein puppy food.

At about 5 weeks of age the pups are completely weaned and of course full of vinegar, romping about and playing as puppies do. The pups are wormed at 4 weeks of age and again at 6 weeks. They are given their first of three puppy shots at 6 weeks of age. At 7 to 8 weeks they are ready to go home. If a pup has to take an airplane ride home then they usually don't leave until they are about 12 weeks of age. This age generally depends on airline policy for shipping live freight.

Pups can start receiving some training at about 6 weeeks of age. They certainly learn fast and many pups can sit, shake hands, or even do a gentle ben routine (sit up on back legs with front paws in the air) when they leave our home for your home. Australian Shepherds are very smart and creatures of routine. They love to be with you, their herd, and you will soon learn that they will learn your daily routines quicker than you realize. Knowing this can give you a tremendous advantage in training your pup.
